Let’s be honest for a second: looking at your computer screen and seeing a “System Update” notification is a lot like seeing a dental appointment on your calendar. You know it’s probably good for you, but you’d much rather be doing literally anything else, like counting the pebbles in the Grand River or waiting in the Tim Hortons drive-thru on King George Rd during rush hour.

It is now April 2026, and the chatter about Windows 11 has reached a fever pitch. If you’re living in Brantford, Paris, St. George, or anywhere else in Brant County, you might be wondering if your trusty Windows 10 machine is officially a relic of the past. At ChipMonk IT Services, we’ve been hearing the same questions over and over: “Do I really have to change? Is my computer going to explode if I don’t? Why does Microsoft keep moving the Start button?!”

As the owner of ChipMonk, John Monkhouse, I’ve seen every version of Windows since the days when computers were beige boxes that made screeching noises to connect to the internet. With over 20 years of experience under our belts, we’ve learned one thing: technology should work for you, not the other way around.

So, grab a coffee, and let’s get into the nitty-gritty of whether you actually need to hit that "Upgrade" button today.

The State of Play: Windows in 2026

First, let’s look at the calendar. Microsoft officially ended mainstream support for Windows 10 back in October 2025. We are now six months into the “post-support” era. For most home users, this means the safety net is starting to fray.

While your computer didn’t stop working at the stroke of midnight on Halloween 2025, the lack of regular security patches means that every day you stay on Windows 10, you’re taking a slightly bigger risk. In the world of cybersecurity, "no updates" is essentially an open invitation for the bad guys to try and find a way into your data.

The "Extended Security" Lifeline

There is a bit of a silver lining. Microsoft realized that there are millions of PCs (and plenty of small businesses in Brantford) that aren't quite ready to make the leap. They offered an Extended Security Updates (ESU) program that runs until 2028. However, for residential users, this is a paid service, and for small businesses, the price doubles every year.

At ChipMonk, we usually tell our clients: if you’re paying to keep an old operating system alive, you might be throwing good money after bad.

The Brant County Hardware Reality

We see a lot of computers in our shop. From the sleek laptops used by commuters heading to Toronto to the sturdy desktops that have been powering local Paris storefronts for a decade. The biggest hurdle to Windows 11 isn't whether you want it, it’s whether your computer can handle it.

Windows 11 famously requires something called TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module). In plain English? It’s a tiny security chip. If your computer was built before 2018, there’s a high chance it doesn’t have this chip, or it has an older version that Windows 11 rejects like a bad organ transplant.

Is Your PC "Too Old"?

In our experience, a lot of the hardware found in residential setups across Brant County is perfectly "fine" for browsing the web or checking emails, but it fails Microsoft’s strict Windows 11 checklist.

If you’re running an older Intel Core i5 from the 6th or 7th generation, Windows 11 will tell you "No." It’s frustrating. Your hardware is fast enough, it’s reliable, but the software has moved on. This is where we see the most "tech rage" in our shop.

If you're unsure, you don't have to guess. You can drop by or contact us and we can run a quick diagnostic. We’ve been doing this for two decades, we can tell you in five minutes if your machine is a candidate for an upgrade or if it's better left as a dedicated Windows 10 machine for offline tasks.

Why Make the Leap? The Pros of Windows 11

If your hardware is compatible, should you do it? Windows 11 isn't just a fresh coat of paint (though it does look much cleaner). Here are the real-world benefits we’ve seen for our local clients:

  1. Better Security: This is the big one. Because of that TPM chip requirement, Windows 11 is significantly harder to hack. It’s built for a world where phishing and ransomware are daily threats.
  2. Snap Layouts: If you’re a small business owner in Cambridge or Brantford and you find yourself juggling twelve different spreadsheets, the "Snap Layouts" feature in Windows 11 is a godsend for productivity.
  3. Modern Feel: Let’s face it, Windows 10 is starting to look a bit like a flip phone in a smartphone world. Windows 11 is faster, smoother, and handles modern monitors much better.

The "If It Ain't Broke" Argument

Now, I’m going to say something that might surprise you coming from an IT guy: You don’t always have to upgrade.

If your current computer is 7 years old, it’s running Windows 10 perfectly, and you only use it for basic tasks, you don't need to rush out and buy a new $1,000 laptop today. You can safely use that machine for a while longer, provided you are careful about where you click and keep your antivirus up to date.

However, if that computer is the backbone of your business, or if you use it for banking and sensitive personal info, the risk profile changes. In 2026, using an unsupported OS for banking is like leaving your front door wide open in the middle of the night, sure, nothing might happen, but why take the chance?
